An international team of HART researchers is undertaking a sociological-phenomenological study of sporting embodiment and the senses, in a range of physical cultures, including distance running, boxing, mixed martial arts, and traditionalist Chinese martial arts. The team comprises Dr Jacquelyn Allen-Collinson, HART Director, Lincoln, Dr Anu Vaittinen, Newcastle University, Dr Helen Owton, The Open University, and Dr George Jennings, Universidad YMCA, Mexico. We are particularly interested in investigating participants’ ‘intense embodiment’ experiences of these physical-cultural lifeworlds. An article from the project examines the lived senses of heat in women’s running and women’s boxing. A pre-publication copy of the Body & Society article can be found here, together with a video abstract.
